TPS APPLIED "LEAN" METHOD FOR MINIMALIZING WASTE

 

Surabaya - For Manufacturing Company, The term "LEAN" is not an odd term, because many manufacturing companies have implemented this method. What about port companies like TPS, can it be applied at TPS?

Answering the challenge, it turns out that TPS is interested in applying the method on its work environment. Start the end of August as many as 20 employees of TPS especially at Supervising Terminal Operations - Container Terminal (STO-CT) which are Superintendent/Supervisor from OPS, ENG, FIN, IT and 5 employees from the vendor who works at TPS following the LEAN 3 workshop, while applying LEAN method in their work place.

LEAN is a production practice methodology which focused on use and empowement of the source to create the value for the customer. The way is to eliminate the waste that happened in the process so the process occurs more effective and efficient, with the output quality better.

Operations Director of PT. TPS, Rodrigo Shancez said that this simple, but effective approach is about continuing to move TPS towards Service Excellence!

The participants were divided into 5 groups which every group has different project, that is : A group (Reduce QC Cycle Time), B group (Reduce QC breakdown delays), C group (Reduce delays for export loading), D group (Reduce RTH shift change over) and E group (Reduce ITV Yard_Berth Cycle time delays)

The workshop was facilitated by Ricaurte Santamaria, Manager of Global Engineering Support Operations and Engineering from DP World Dubai, participants were asked to explain the background of the issue and why, and what are the consequences to the business process. After that all the participants will learn how to explain the current condition along with how it works. In this stage, all the participants are required to see the work process directly, describe the "flow" sketch and make the time study. Next stage is determine the conditions or results to be expected.

Next all the participants learn how to find the root cause effectively using Fishbone Diagram (6M) MAN or human, Machine or Equipment/Technology, Material or physical, Method or way of working, Measurement or how to measure/measuring instrument and Mother Nature or Nature Condition/environment and look for the problem through Fishbone Diagram. All the stages were written and described on A3 paper according to the title LEAN A3 (A3 = the paper size is equivalent with 11 inch x 17 inch)

All the participants were enthusiastic in getting the training up to the LEAN A3 stage, where later they will apply the LEAN method sustainably, with the goal to reduce or even eliminate the waste.

In this first stage, all participants are learning the LEAN approach at TPS, and in the next workshop will be more focused about the basic principles of LEAN and how to identify waste in detail.

All this kind of waste often happens without realizing it, because it has been regarded as something normal and common, when in fact it is very detrimental, in particular it often causes an increase in operational costs that should be avoided. Because of that, LEAN implementation can help the company to cut unnecessary costs, while increasing the revenue. Hope in the future TPS will continue to innovate through applying the LEAN method in every line of works at TPS, so we can give the excellence service to the customer.
