Computer Control System

December 1999 saw the introduction of the new computer control system at TPS. The TOPS System designed by Realtime Business Solutions of Sydney, Australia, is a PC based client server system utilising the latest technology. This includes the use of radio data links to all end users. The new system is designed to help develop the level of services provided to our clients with improved accuracy and in a timely fashion. TOPS consists of two separate but integrated systems, Top-O and Top-X.

Top-X (Terminal Operations Package for X-Windows) is a real-time graphical planning, control, and monitoring system incorporating a fully integrated radio communications system for transmission of data to and from all container handling units within the terminal.

Top-O (Terminal Operations Package for Oracle) developed by Container Automation Systems provides the backend gate and management information system.

The TOPS system provides significant advantages such as strong support for Electronic Data Interchange, good reporting and statistical analysis and most importantly it allows for 24-hour operations without the requirement to close the terminal for systems back-ups.
